Surcharge

Surcharge programs must track notice, card-type logic, and disclosures exactly.

The surcharge amount should mirror cost-of-acceptance limits and be shown clearly to the cardholder.

Core checkpoints

  • Provide the required advance notice to your acquirer before go-live.
  • Apply surcharge to credit card transactions only, never debit or prepaid.
  • Keep surcharge at or below your documented cost-of-acceptance and network cap constraints.
  • Disclose surcharge at entry and point-of-sale, and itemize it on receipts.
  • Use one implementation mode: brand-level or product-level, not both simultaneously.

Official disclosure examples

Visa publishes sample entry and point-of-sale language that merchants can use as a baseline when reviewing signage quality and consistency.
